Mary Elizabeth Micari (Rev. Mary)
Currently, Mary has a successful cabaret career in NYC with her several acts seen at Don’t Tell Mama, Pangea, The West End, The Duplex and in many venues in Brooklyn and throughout Manhattan. She continues to create new shows every year to great reviews!
Mary has been singing since she was a child. Years of training throughout her early years in choirs in schools, churches and large organizations led to solo-singing and a Theater degree. Mary became, and continues, to be well-versed in Pop, Rock, Soul, R &B and Blues as well as Musical Theater and Opera.
Deciding to begin a serious vocal study after college, Mary went on to study Opera for more than 15 years in NYC with successful singers and teachers who were trained by some of Opera’s greats such as Maria Callas and Placido Domingo. As an Opera singer, Mary performed all around NYC in Roles including Turandot, Tosca, Suor Angelica, Dido, Leonora in Forza del Destino. Mary appeared with Opera NY, DaCapo Opera, Herkalione Opera, Genesis Opera, Queens Opera.
Mary also founded her own theater company called None of the Above when she was just 19. Much later on Mary became a founding member of Genesis Repertory. There, Mary worked as a singer, actor, director, designer, and producer. Genesis Rep has produced over 100 plays including a large portion of Shakespeare’s canon. Mary was seen as Lady Macbeth, Queen Gertrude, The Nurse from Romeo and Juliet, Titania in Midsummer Night’s Dream, Adrianna in Comedy of Errors, Calpurnia in Julius Cesar and Carla Phillips in War of the Worlds and She in Faustus. As a director with Genesis, Medea in which she played the title role, Lysistrata and Romeo and Juliet in two different productions as well as Faustus (Orson Welles version) and The 50th Anniversary Production of LINE at 13th Street Rep.
Mary also has skills with makeup and hair (she did a double major in college with the performance she added costume design) and used those skills to her advantage after being licensed and studying FX makeup as well and began to do the coolest day job she ever had! Mary worked on over 10 Broadway shows and many films and TV commercials. Singing and studying voice all the while!
Hair and Makeup: Beauty and the Beast, Aida, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Wonderful Town, Little Women, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Light in the Piazza, Spamalot, The Producers and Mary Poppins. Worked directly with Jerry Orbach, Robert Morse, Chita Rivera, Donna Murphy, Patti LuPone, Maureen McGovern, Brooke Sheilds, Sutton Foster
While working her interesting day job, Mary decided to transition away from her concentration in Opera to different styles of singing including Jazz, Blues, and Standards as well as a deeper study of Musical Theater styles. She studied with several well-known Broadway singers including Maureen McGovern and Felicity LaFortune while working backstage. Mary likes to say that just standing, watching such wonderful voices taught her more than any studio could.
Mary has been teaching voice for over 20 years with some great successes. Her students have gone onto form their own bands, musical projects, win contests, be accepted to acclaimed performing arts schools, get scholarships and be cast repeatedly in shows and films and even win coveted vocal awards.
Mary fell very ill in 2011 and struggled to regain both health and voice and in the process, she opened deeply to healing techniques she was already familiar with like herbalism and a three-year study with Master Herbalists Susun Weed and Peeka Trenkle a deep personal study in aromatherapy and meditation and then added to her healing repertoire becoming a Reiki Master and Ordained Reiki Minister with Master Joanna Crespo as well as a Sound & Music Healer with the Sound and Music Institute in NYC!
All of these training and experiences combined became the PATH Method™ (Performing Arts Training Holistically). Not only was this combination successful for Mary but it has helped all her students in many ways as well. Mary has worked with singers who are disabled and dealing with PTSD as well as fear issues and performance anxiety. Mary founded the M Center in 2000 and has been running it ever since having again the coolest day job ever! Her students are a wonderful and fulfilling part of her life.
