Mason Griffin is a musical theater accompanist, coach, conductor, and music director. In New York, he has taught and/or performed at LaGuardia High School, Amas Musical Theatre, Musical Theater College Auditions, New York Film Academy, Applause NY, Broadway Classroom, The West End Lounge, NYU, the City College of New York, Sing for Your Seniors, the M Center, and The United Nations International School.
He is music director of the current Off-Broadway revival of Naked Boys Singing.
As music director, Mason spearheaded production (in New York and regionally) of RENT, Les Miserables, The Addams Family, Spelling Bee, Once on this Island, A Funny Thing…Forum, Little Shop of Horrors, I Love a Piano and Dreamgirls. Mason was the original music director for the off-Broadway premiere of Generations with the M Center at the 13th Street Theatre and one of the touring pianists for Granny’s Blue-Mers with Rev. Mary aka Mary Elizabeth Micari.
A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mason was the guest conductor of Louisiana State University’s annual spring musical theater showcase for six years. He’s worked with industry professionals such as Taylor Negron, Steve Martin, Edie Brickell, Patti Murin, Andrew Rannells and Laura Osnes.
He also served as music director for performances at 54 Below, The Duplex Cabaret, Theatre Row, The Laurie Beechman Theater, Uncle Charlie’s Piano Bar, The 13th Street Repertory Theater and The Triad.
Mason created the show No Blue Monday, celebrating the life and music of Broadway composer/lyricist Jerry Herman and performed it in historic musical and cabaret venues, Upper East Side Women’s Clubs, and even celebrated philanthropists’ living rooms. He is currently in negotiations with the landmark, Lambs Club to bring the performance to their theatre. Outside of the musical theater, Mason is a dedicated and avid researcher of the avant-garde composer John Cage. His main interest lies in Cage’s prepared and unprepared piano works from 1935-1955.
